I grew up in a household that at Christmas time instead of Christmas carols my dad would play Motown records, so when I first heard of The Phonix Band and heard their music on their website I was so impressed! I immediately wished I could go back in time and hire them for my own wedding! It would have been a blast! One of the common questions I get as a wedding planner is finding a DJ or band that can not only accommodate the bride & groom’s music tastes but entertain the guests, such as Grandma and Auntie Jean who likes to boogie to the oldies! I think The Phonix Band can definitely accommodate both and keep your guests dancing the whole night!
I sat down with Reuben Avery, the band’s manager and trumpet player, for a coffee to chat a bit more about The Phonix Band and what makes them so unique! Reuben also shared some great resources like “Tips for Hiring A Wedding Band” and “What Should A Wedding Band Cost?”

We love a good party, and we love our music, so the business just made sense!
GSEP: What is one thing that sets your business apart from other similar businesses/services?
PB: We are Vancouver’s only 9-piece funk, soul and R&B wedding band. No one else focuses on our unique combination of carefully selected, timeless, repertoire at the same time as identifying specifically as a ‘wedding band’. Further, most bands that play repertoire like ours are comprised of members in their 50’s and 60’s. GSEP: What are some tips or words of encouragement to couples getting married?
PB: The first two things people remember about your wedding are the food and the music. More specifically, they’ll remember how they felt. A great band can connect with your guests and leave everyone feeling like they were part of something really special. If that is important to you, spend the extra buck and get a band – don’t just settle for a DJ. This is a party you only get to have once and these are memories you are stuck with for the rest of your life. Give some thought to how much that is worth!
