When I first met Tina & Rob in the Fall of 2013 and heard about all the details of their big day, I was so excited to be a part of it. I drove home thinking “pick me, pick me” and was so thrilled when Tina called me to say they would like me to be their wedding planner. Their charismatic & fun-loving personalities were easy to connect with in the first few minutes of meeting them and over the next six months of helping them plan their wedding, we became closer and that made being a part of their day all more special. Tina & Rob are natural performers, so how fitting to have the setting for their special day at Performance Works on Granville Island. The ceremony taking place right on centre stage and for their grand entrance as Mr & Mrs a karaoke battle ending with a duet to their own version of JayZ & Beyonce’s Crazy In Love to kick off the party! Tina’s vision for her wedding day was to ensure the celebration was memorable, funny, heartfelt and entertaining! (They definitely succeeded!) They wanted their friends and family to have fun to enjoy the night in a relaxed setting. The most important pieces of the wedding day to Tina & Rob were definitely the overall atmosphere, the music and the food!
The Food: The wedding was catered by Smoke & Bones BBQ. Tina & Rob wanted a fun and unique menu that suited their tastes and personalities. On the menu was BBQ back ribs, pulled pork and beef briquet with sides of coleslaw and fully loaded baked potatoes! They had a traditional cake and cupcakes but also had a fresh baked pie buffet provided by Smoke N Bones which guests LOVED!
The theme: A red and aqua colour scheme with rustic touches looked stunning against this empty theatre space canvas! For the ceremony, a beautiful light white background was set up on stage with pillars on either side decorated with red tulip arrangements. Reception tables had aqua pin tuck runners, red napkins, candles and simple red tulip centre pieces. Table numbers were made of corks and each guest received a mason jar full of candy with their names written with chalk paint. Red & aqua lanterns hung from beams in the ceiling to complete the look. All the linens and set up was done by Kelly at Elegantly Covered Events. Tina and her mom created the items for the guest book table including the framed seating chart turned out amazing
The venue: originally a machine shop dating back to the 1920’s, the Barbara Dalrymple-designed Performance Works opened on Granville Island in 1992 with a mandate to provide the arts community with a permanent rehearsal and performance venue. The challenge: Transforming the theatre style ceremony space into a dinner reception space for 175 guests in 30 minutes during the cocktail reception. While we are always up for a challenge, this was some tight timing which took a team of people including venue technicians, set up crew and decorators but WE DID IT! I’m so proud of the team who helped!
The Grand Entrance as Mr & Mrs: As I said, Tina & Rob are natural performers. Rob is the voice of the Vancouver Canadians for Team 1040 and Tina grew up taking singing and dancing lessons. They entered the room and made their way to front of the dance floor. The performance kicked off with some lip syncing to the greats such as Michael Jackson & Tina Turner and then for their final number together they sang & rapped Beyonce & JayZ’s Crazy In Love. Later during the night, just when we thought the performances were over, Tina’s cousins who were the emcee’s for the night did a special Polynesian dance for the bride & groom. It was beautiful!
The dance party lasted hours and DJ Hustle was excellent on the 1’s & 2’s (I’ve always wanted to say that!) These friends and family sure knew how to have a great time! The dance floor was packed for the whole night!
From the moment I met Tina & Rob, I knew this wedding day would be amazing but it was beyond my expectations! I am so blessed to have been a part of their special day and to meet all your friends and family! It was a wedding I will never forget! Thanks to all the amazing vendors who helped make this day come together so beautifully!
Congratulations again Tina & Rob! Looking forward to seeing you soon at Donna & Julian’s wedding! Wishing you both all the best!
